Abstract

We are currently witnessing an important paradigm shiftin information system construction, namely the move fromobject and component technology to model technology. Theobject technology revolution has allowed the replacementof the over twenty-year-old step-wise procedural decompositionparadigm with the more fashionable object compositionparadigm. Surprisingly, this evolution seems to havetriggered another even more radical change, the currenttrend toward model transformation. A concrete example isthe Object Management Group's rapid move from its previousObject Management Architecture vision to the latestModel-Driven Architecture. This paper proposes an interpretationof this evolution through abstract investigation. In order to stay as language-independent as possible, wehave employed the neutral formalism of Sowa's conceptualgraphs to describe the various situations characterizing thisorganization. This will allow us to identify potential problemsin the proposed modeling framework and suggest somepossible solutions.
