The number of Internet users and internet-connectedcomputers are estimated to be in the order of hundredmillions.Users are restricted to performmainly informationretrieval (document search) and e-commerce related(shopping, online banking) tasks, while the majority of thecomputing resources are under-utilised.With suitabletechnology, it is possible to create a service-centredInternet, where users can perform more sophisticated (e.g.computing) tasks. We argue that grid research shouldexplore the issues of creating very large systems of servicesavailable to many users, as opposed to HPC programsavailable to relatively few scientific users. This paperdescribes the architecture of a Jini based global computingenvironment, whose aim is to support the execution ofsequential and parallel programs on a large scale.Wedescribe the architecture, supported programming modelsof the system, as well as our current, ongoing work andfuture development plans.
