Abstract

Software services are being promoted as the next bigstep forward in software engineering.. Inevitably, bothservice vendor and service client programs willrequire maintenance. We present a servicearchitecture that has been motivated by a long termvision for software as something which is used, notowned. This architecture is used to show howevolution of software can be achieved. It uses themarketplace to drive the process incrementally. Wesummarise a new fault-tolerant private informationretrieval scheme for protecting users' privacy andensuring service provision even in the presence ofintentional/unintentional service provider faults (e.g.malicious failures). An implementation on a realisticdistributed database suggests only a modestperformance overhead.
