We discuss the modifiability of Cobol legacy code andpropose an approach to improving the modifiability usingautomatic restructuring transformations. We developedan algorithm that allows application of these transformationsto large industrial Cobol systems. We demonstratethe adaptability of the transformations by extending themwith new transformation patterns. Two case studies (nearly3 million lines of code in total) with real-life Cobol programsshow the large-scale application of the transformations.
