Abstract

The Internet has seen an increase in complexity due tothe introduction of new types of networking devices andservices, particularly at points of discontinuity known asnetwork edges. As the networking industry continues toadd revenue generating services at network edges, there isan increasing need to provide a systematic method fordynamically introducing and providing these new servicesin lieu of the ad-hoc approach that is in use today. To thisend we support a phased approach to "activating" theInternet and suggest that there exists an immediate needfor realizing Active Networks concepts at the networkedges. In this context, we present our efforts towards thedevelopment of a Content-aware Active Gateway (CAG)architecture. With the help of two practical servicesrunning on our initial prototype, built from commercialnetworking devices, we give a qualitative and quantitativeview of the CAG potential.
