Abstract

The explosive growth in the volume of information available on the Web and in enterprise databases continues unabated. Managing these large quantities of information remains a challenge for both government and industry. TRW's Digital Media Systems Lab has developed a research platform, InfoWeb(TM), that can be described as an "information infrastructure" that provides seamless access to Web search services, Web pages, intranet databases, special-purpose search engines, and legacy systems. InfoWeb(TM) generates and manages descriptive metadata associated with "content objects"- text, compound documents, graphics, images, video, audio, numeric data, etc. The metadata add value to the intellectual content of the content objects and provide for varied retrieval strategies, notably through complex searches and automatic hyperlinks.
