Abstract

IBM Almaden Research Center, 650 Harry Road, San Jose, California 95120-6099. Access control is a key problem for information processing, especially in a distributed environment such as the Internet and Intranet, where diverse information resources will be made available for "diverse" users to query. We present an efficient method for large scale access control problem. It main ingredient is a representation of hierarchical access group structures as intervals over integers and a decomposition scheme that reduces any group structure to ones that have interval representations. This representation allows the problem for checking access rights to be reduced to an interval containment problem.
