We develop a performance model for an optical burstswitch employing Fiber Delay Lines (FDLs) to enhancesystem performance. An M/M/k queueing model withbalking is derived to predict the system behavior for bothclassless and prioritized traffic. Simple closed-form expressionsare obtained for the burst loss probability of classlesstraffic. Using a conservation relation, the balking modelis extended to model the performance of prioritized trafficclasses. A discrete event-driven simulator is constructed toverify the accuracy of the proposed models. Numerical resultsshow that the classless model fits simulation resultsvery well. The model for prioritized traffic provides an accuratefit for the performance of the highest traffic class andlower bounds for the other traffic classes that are tighterthan earlier known results.
