Music formatting is one of the most relevant problems ofprogram for music notation editing. Several written andnon-written rules are typically applied by music engraversand composers. In this paper, an innovative approach forformalizing formatting rules is presented. The approach isbased on insertion, position and priority rules andassociated conditions for their activation. Conditions andrules formalized in the proposed approach areautomatically executed by a formatting engine calledMILLA (Music Intelligence Formatting Language). Theapproach is proposed by using several examples.
