Constraint Databases (CDBs) are the combination of Constraint Logic Programming (CLP, which is one of the strategic directions in computing research) and database technology. CDBs represent a new kind of post-relational databases, naturally extending relational, deductive, or object-oriented databases by making feasible the use of constraints to represent possibly infinite but representable complex data. This paper discusses constraint query languages and their expressive powers, constraint query evaluation and optimization techniques, CDBs prototype systems and promising directions of research on CDBs.
