Abstract

This paper is a discussion of the issues relating to the use of satellite to deliver multimedia services. Following an introduction to satellite services and comparison with terrestrial services, the factors affecting cost and performance are addressed and practical examples are given. The performance of TCP over satellite is described and the use of performance enhancing proxies investigated. The conclusion is that satellites provide a complementary and viable means of access where traditional terrestrial technologies are not viable. Satellite can provide fully acceptable performance on point-to-point connections using TCP and has clear performance advantages for multimedia services, being a natural medium for real-time streaming over UDP and for multicasting.
