This paper describes a program called GENEX that reasons about the behavior of bacterial operons. It is the first step towards a generalized system that will reason about genetic control mechanisms. The system is easily extensible and able to produce detailed explanations without relaying on canned text. Problems in molecular genetics are complicated by uncertainty introduced when reasoning about conformations. GENEX can reduce the number of possible solutions that must be verified by formulating likely models from the behavior of the system it is examining. Future work is outlined that will extend the program presented here by improving the reasoning mechanisms, utilizing several AI methods.
