This report contains a survey of surface shading and illumination methods, i.e. of methods applied to determining the color of the individual raster points in the image of a 3D scene, which is the fundamental problem of the synthesis 3D images. The paper is one of series and is the result of author''s research work for the preparation of his PhD thesis about the problem of producing realistic images of 3D objects and scenes. This work was supported by a grant from the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Grant No. OTKA 2572/1991.
