We present a protocol for the fault-tolerant execution of parallel programs. The protocol leaves the implementation free to make choices concerning efficiency tradeoffs. Thus, we are proposing a design pattern rather than a fully specified algorithm. The protocol is modeled with the help of Petri nets. Based on the Petri net model, we formally prove the correctness of the design pattern. This verification serves two goals: first, it guarantees the correctness of the design pattern; second, it serves as a test case for the underlying verification technique.
