Abstract

With the availability of High Speed Network paradigms such as Asynchronous Transfer Mode, communication bandwidth between hosts is not a bottleneck anymore. ATM has moved the frame of problem domain to the deficiencies in higher-level protocols (such as TCP/IP) and their integration with HSNs. In this paper, we investigate the limitations of a standard TCP(UDP)/IP implementation on Sun SPARCstation workstations interconnected by a Synoptics LattisCell 10104 16x16 port ATM switch. We measure performance in terms of user observable parameters like throughput, end-to-end delay, delay jitter, latency and loss. We study the effect of parameters such as window size in terms of varying block size. We report various abnormalities in TCP, the lossy behavior of UDP and present solutions to these problems. With a simple rate control algorithm we reduce the loss percentage at lower block sizes from 27\% to 15\% for UDP. We demonstrate a throughput of 75Mbps in case of TCP. A naive user of network with a little knowledge of the application can use this information to gain good performance from the network.
