In writing a compiler of a new language (ALGOL W) for a new machine (IBM System/360) we were forced to deal with many unforeseen problems in addition to the problems we expected to encounter. This report describes the final version of the compiler. The implemented language ALGOL W is based on the Wirth/Hoare proposal for a successor to ALGOL 60. The major differences from that proposal are in string definition and operations and in complex number representation.
