The paper examines recent developments in computing that are relevant to the area of large scale distributed computing systems (LSDCS). A number of LSDCS applications are discussed in order to better understand the requirements placed on the underlying distributed computing infractructure. In light of these requirements, the paper examines a number of key facilities required within an architecture for LSDCS. The research results of the BROADCAST Project on understanding, designing and implementing large scale distributed computing systems are summarised.
