IN A RELATED PAPER (RICH 86B], WE DEVELOP A MODEL FOR ERROR DETECTION BASED ON CONDITIONS THAT ARE NECESSARY AND SUFFICIENT TO GUARANTEE THAT A FAULT ORIGINATES AN ERROR THAT TRANSFERS TO SOME POINT AT WHICH IT IS RE- VEALED. THIS MODEL OF ERROR DETECTION ALSO PROVIDES A FRAMEWORK WITHIN WHICH THE CAPABILITIES OF OTHER TESTING CRITERIA CAN BE EVALUATED. IN THIS PAPER, WE ANALYZE THREE TEST DATA SELECTION CRITERIA THAT ATTEMPT TO DETECT FAULTS IN THE FIVE CLASSES TO WHICH THE MODEL IS APPLIED IN [RICH86B]. THE CRITERIA ANALYZED ARE THOSE FORMALLY REPRESENTED IN [RICH86A]. THIS ANALY- SIS SHOWS THAT NONE OF THESE CRITERIA IS COMPLETELY EFFECTIVE AT GUARANTEE- ING ERROR DETECTION FOR THESE FAULT CLASSES.
