Abstract

Modern society has grown to depend heavily upon a set of infrastructure services for day-to-day operations to proceed normally and efficiently. Examples of these infrastructure services include power distribution, telecommunications, transportation, and financial systems. In the event of widespread failure in any of these systems, normal activities would be severely disrupted; therefore, these systems are referred to as critical infrastructure applications. This report presents the results of a study of three particular critical infrastructure applications: the banking and finance domain, the rail transport industry, and the air traffic control system. An overview of each application area is provided, including major processes and information concerning system architecture and implementation. In addition, a detailed bibliography is provided for each application domain.
