Abstract

Congruential sieves have been constructed as softwareprograms or as physical devices for nearly a century. Factorstencils were used by D. N. Lehmer in his table of primenumbers constructed early in the 20th century, and a sequenceof special purpose electrical, electro-mechanical,and electronic devices were built by D. H. Lehmer throughthe middle part of the century. More recently, special purposesieves using FPGAs have been built and programson more generic reconfigurable computing machines havebeen written to implement sieves. We describe here a new implementation of a sieve on theStar Bridge Systems HC 36m reconfigurable computer.
