Abstract

Distributed persistent systems often provide transparencyof distribution at the cost of autonomy of object stores, efficiencyof cooperation between them and scalability of thesystem. We propose a flexible model of distribution to supportscalable persistent application systems that allows forboth autonomous stores with low-cost, limited commitmentsto other stores and sophisticated models of interaction on alimited scale with maintainable inter-store references.Scalability would be provided by exposing the distributionof stores, with the use of extended URLs as global names.Autonomy of a store would be preserved by making it possiblefor the store to retain control over the objects it makesavailable for remote use.
