Abstract

This paper describes our use of object technologyto provide a framework for interoperability betweendatabases. We are particularly interested in controlling the effects on the federation of schema modification in local databases. We describe two informal models for federated database design. The abstract modeldescribes the different metadata objects in the federation and how they relate to each other. The servicemodel is used as a framework architecture for federated database design. The architecture is designed toensure that the integration of local databases allows thefederation to control its view of local schema changes. We have used CORBA's distributed object technologyto implement a prototype based on the service modeldescribed in this paper.
