Abstract

To date, no comprehensive, theoretical framework existsfor providing instructional environments for distancelearning. With this paper we hope to lay out aCollaborative Hypermedia Educational Framework(CHEF) for instruction at university level that addressesthis gap. The CHEF provides a fundamental philosophy orvantage point for thinking about how best to serve distancelearning students, instructors, and courseware developersin a principled manner. The CHEF embodies threefundamental concepts: collaboration, hypertext andmultimedia. The premise of the proposed framework is thatthese three concepts should underlie most facets oflearning and instruction, and support the implementationof many educational and learning theories.
