Hypertext appears to be a powerful cognitive tool supportingknowledge construction. A study was conducted to determinewhether or not collaborative hypertext affects learningoutcomes in the learning of basic concepts in informatics. We organized two courses about the basics in informaticsusing collaborative hypertext (experimental groups).Simultaneously, we ran two courses without collaborativehypertext (control groups). We analyzed learning and in thispaper we present our preliminary results utilizing a SOLOtaxonomy based measure. The study found that the use ofcollaborative hypertext does not improve cognitive learningoutcomes in our context. This reflects the need for traditionaluncomputerized learning methods at the start of learninginformatics or the need to concentrate on improving thetruthfulness of a collaborative hypertext-based learningenvironment. However, some students can derive benefitfrom collaborative hypertext under all circumstances and thenext question will be how to find these students.
