Abstract

Challenging application domains for workflow systems suchas electronic publishing and technical engineering requireequally progressed document management features. Thisis due to the fact that document management within theseapplication domains is characterized by huge amounts ofdata, highly structured documents, as well as hypermediainformation. Integrating existing services for workflowmanagement based on an active object-oriented databasesystem with document management based on commonly acceptedinternational standards like SGML (Standard GeneralizedMarkup Language) and HyTime (Hypermedia/TimebasedStructuring Language) allows to benefit from the advantagesof both technologies. This results in documentbasedworkflow management systems which can cope bothwith frequently changing organizational requirements andwith the exchange of platform independent interlinked documents across system boundaries.
