This paper reports results from a study on theadoption of an information visualization system byadministrative data analysts. Despite the fact that thesystem was neither fully integrated with their currentsoftware tools nor with their existing data analysispractices, analysts identified a number of key benefits thatvisualization systems provide to their work. These benefitsfor the most part occurred when analysts went beyondtheir habitual and well-mastered data analysis routinesand engaged in creative discovery processes. We analyzethe conditions under which these benefits arose, to informthe design of visualization systems that can better assistthe work of administrative data analysts.
