In this paper, we present an approach for the design ofcomplex adaptive systems, based on adaptive multi-agentsystems and emergence. We expound the AMAS theory(Adaptive Multi-Agent Systems) and its technical working. This theory gives local agent design criteria so as toenable the emergence of an organization within thesystem and thus, of the global function of the system.Wealso present the theorem of functional adequacy witchensures that a cooperative self organizing systemperforms a suitable work.Applications of this theory inthe multi-agent system framework led us to define thearchitecture and a general algorithm for cooperativeagents. The originality of our approach lies in the very genericmanner our re-organization rules work and that they arecompletely independent from the function the system hasto compute.
