In medical healthcare two contrasting tendencies canbe observed. On the one hand, recent technological advancementsallow maintaining a quality in medical treatmentthat was hardly to imagine some years ago. On theother hand, the investment in newer medical devices andthe necessary training of the physicians is highly costintensive and can be hardly regained without propermanagement of the clinical processes. This is the aim ofthe PROGEMM (PRocess-Oriented GEneric Managementof Medical Knowledge) approach that is presentedin this paper. PROGEMM combines the specification andexecution of structured workflows combined with highlyflexible and knowledge-intensive tasks. It assists physiciansas well as other medical professionals in their dailywork and, because it is based on the widespread DICOM(Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine) standard, provides a platform for collaboration among physicallydispersed physicians.
