Abstract

WebRat is an interactive system for visualising andrefining search result sets. Documents matching a queryare dynamically clustered on the fly and visualised as acontour map of islands. Thematic clusters are built, analysed, and visualised in real time. Users caninteractively explore the visualisation and refine queriesby selecting from the keywords and clusters presented tothem. WebRat does not rely on precalculated meta data.Instead, necessary information is directly extracted fromquery result representations provided by search engines,as for example ranked lists of document snippets. Thesystem is language-independent and can easily beadapted to a number of data sources and visualisationmodes. WebRat supports agile knowledge retrieval bytransforming unstructured information input into arepresentation enriched with structure and metainformation even when environmental conditions anduser demands change frequently and rapidly.
