Abstract

This paper discusses the challenges and securityissues inherent in building complex cross-organizationalcollaborative projects and software systems withinNASA. By applying the design principles ofcompartmentalization, organizational hierarchy andinter-organizational federation, the Secured AdvancedFederated Environment (SAFE) is laying the foundationfor a collaborative virtual infrastructure for the NASAcommunity. A key element of SAFE is the Micro SecurityDomain (MSD) concept, which balances the need tocollaborate and the need to enforce enterprise and localsecurity rules. With the SAFE approach, security is anintegral component of enterprise software and networkdesign, not an afterthought.
