Abstract

Parallel to the development of a main product such as acar body or a mobile phone, numerous tools and dies needto be specified, developed and produced. The process chainof the tools and dies industry represents the functional linkbetween the main product development and the mass productionof that product. The evolving market, as well as thechanging production and supplier structures of main productvendors are forcing the producers of tools and dies tochange their traditional working methods and to focus onglobal production operations. As a result, there is an increasingneed for collaborative systems in the tool and diemanufacturing industry. Off-the-shelf collaborative systemsdo not meet the special needs of tools and die producersand such systems often have to be customized. This paperreports on the ongoing design and industrial implementationof a collaborative environment to support concurrentengineering in a manufacturing network.
