Abstract

In order to create, share and improve knowledge onbusiness processes, humans need a common, readable andpreferably visual notation. So far, a lot of effort has beenput into visualisation of process definitions (e.g. therecently published Business Process Modelling Notation - BPMN).In this paper we propose to put equal stress onvisualisation of process execution, thus allowing processperformers to understand the process history, its currentstate and possible future execution. We define a processinstance notation as an extension of BPMN. Theunderlying premise for this approach is the reuse ofwell-defined and commonly accepted concepts from theprocess definition level on the process instance level. Theprototype implementation is being integrated within theICONS knowledge management platform.
