Abstract

In biological systems, autonomic behaviours aredescribed through a language of emotions tocommunicate physical and psychological needs, and themotivations behind behaviour. For example the emotionsof hunger and tiredness describe the current state of anorganism and the motivation to manage resources forself-healing, the emotions of fear and disgust describe themotivation to allocate resources for self-protection.The parallels drawn from the emotional motivationsfor autonomic behaviour in biological systems and theirapplication to the design of Autonomic ComputingSystems are explored through EAMON (EmotionalAttribute MONitor), an application which managessystem components through the emotional attributes ofPreference, Greed and Desire. This paper describes theprinciples behind EAMON and how an implementationcan be used to demonstrate autonomic behaviour.
