Effort estimation is a long faced problem, but, in spiteof the amount of research spent in this field, it stillremains an open issue in the software engineeringcommunity. This is true especially in the case of renewalof legacy systems, where the current and well establishedapproaches also fail. This paper presents an applicationof the method named Dynamic Calibration for effortestimation of renewal projects together with itsexperimental validation. The approach satisfies all therequirements of the estimation models. The resultsobtained applying dynamic calibration are comparedwith those obtained with a competitor method: estimationby analogy. The results are shown to be promisingalthough further experimentation on field is needed.
