Abstract

The objective of this paper is to identifythose factors, which are critical to the success of amaintenance operation in general and to apply them to aparticular maintenance project. The project in question isthe maintenance and evolution of a very large andcomplex banking application system for securitiesprocessing which has been in progress since severalyears. Eight factors are defined and evaluated inaccordance with the existing literature on softwaremaintenance and with the experience gained on severalsuch maintenance projects. Each of the eight factors isscored according to a given metric scale. It is left to theevaluator to weigh and evaluate the significance of theindividual factors. The study is based on empirical datacollected over the duration of the project and is intendedto contribute to the overall knowledge of softwaremaintenance management.
