Abstract

Expert judgement is still the dominant estimation techniquein practice today for software project size and effort. In this paper, we evaluate two techniques that are frequentlysuggested as effective support for human estimators: checklistsand group discussions. A student experiment was conductedto investigate how checklists and group discussionshelp estimators to improve their estimates. The results suggestthat both checklists and group discussions significantlycontribute to improved estimation, but in distinct and complementaryways.
