The important aspect that makes the nature of trafficflow stochastic is the randomness inherent in road user(driver) and vehicular characteristics. This paper givesan overview of the development, validation and use of astochastic traffic-flow simulation model for urbanhighways with heterogeneous traffic. An appropriatemethodology for the collection and extraction of headwaydata has been suggested. The headways of urban mixed-trafficdominated by smaller vehicles like motorized two-wheelerscan be modeled using Negative exponentialdistribution over a wider range of traffic flow. An attempthas also been made to model the traffic flow on a roadstretch with bus stops. The random natures of the arrivalpattern and dwell time of the buses have been suitablyincorporated.
