Abstract

The variance of image intensities in a moving window is an indicator of texture which can be calculated very efficiently and perhabs deserves to be more widely used. Ways in which it can be extended to comparisons of responses with different window sizes, to calculation of lagged autocorrelations and to anisotropic measurements are described and illustrated.
