Abstract

A web-based system called Karlsruhe's virtual documentation (KaViDo) tool for collaborative research and development is presented. The architecture of the system including its three layers (presentation layer, development layer, persistence layer) is explained and six different application modules are presented. The objectives of KaViDo are to record and document development processes, to manage the competences of distributed experts, to exchange user experiences and to assist product development. It ensures for the fact that product information and construction knowledge are shared between the project collaborators. KaViDo is a browser-based tool. Its implementation is using web services. XML is used to exchange data between KaViDo and other applications. The practical use of KaViDo is demonstrated by two case examples. First, an interdisciplinary student contest is described. Different groups had to develop, build and program a mobile robot by using the KaViDo system and testing its efficiency. For using KaViDo in an industrial environment, it is integrated in a web-based process tool. This tool is presented and the integration of KaViDo is explained.
