Evolution of software challenges multi-agent systems to be adaptiveand the adaptation capabilities should be provided at both theagent level and the system level. In this paper, we study theadaptation of multi-agent systems from the system level anddescribe a formal framework for multi-agent systems with adaptationcapabilities. In the framework, agents are indirectlyinter-connected viaroles and interaction protocols are defined asentities independent of agents and roles. Thus agents, roles, andinteraction protocols involved in multi-agent systems need notalways adjust their behaviors or specifications to adapt to thechanges of system structures and interaction protocols.
