Abstract

Facing great challenges in designing better assistive technologywith ever more complex and pervasive IT systems we need a generalchange in our understanding of designing IT. Ways to improve theperformance of IT without drowning in complexity are of primeimportance. This paper presents bio-mimetic design of AmbientIntelligen-ce as a candidate heuristic for the task. It is shownhow better assistive functionally goes hand in hand with improvedinfrastructural capacities by mimicking natural complex systems. Onthe basis of a presentation of organizational and developmentalissues addressed bymodern biological models we will suggestpreliminary design constraints for Ambient Intelligence ecologies.
