Abstract

Natural images are highly structured in their spatialconfiguration. Where one would expect a different spatialdistribution for every image, as each image has a differentspatiallay out, we show that the spatial statistics of recordedimages can be explained by a single process of sequentialfragmentation. The observation by a resolution limited sensorysystem turns out to have a profound influence on the observedstatistics of natural images. The power-law and normal distributionrepresent the extreme cases of sequential fragmentation. Betweenthese two extremes, spatial detail statistics deform from power-lawto normal through the Weibull type distribution as receptive fieldsize increases relative to image detail size.
