This paper presents an agent-based software environmentfor testing web-based applications. The infrastructureof the system consists of a lightweight agent platformthat supports agent communication, an ontology of softwaretesting that enables flexible integration of multipleagents, and a formalism using XML to represent both thebasic and compound concepts of the ontology. Relationsbetween testing concepts are defined and their propertiesare analysed. A number of agents are implemented toperform various tasks in testing web-based applications.Broker agents use the ontology as a means of inferences tomanage the knowledge about agents and assign each taskto the most appropriate agent.
