In this paper, we investigate fairness properties ofMAC protocols in multi-hop ad-hoc networks that haveidentical ranges of communication, interference andcarrier sensing. We propose a new MAC protocol - hybridasynchronous time division multiple access (HATDMA).The proposed protocol contains two schemes: SI-RIhybrid scheme and ATDMA scheme. The hybrid schemeemploys both sender-initiated (SI) and receiver-initiated(RI) collision avoidance mechanisms and adaptivelychooses one of them to use based on the observedperformance. The ATDMA scheme requires a flow justgetting a successful transmission to suspend the nexttransmission for a period of time that is derived from thetraffic load observed around the flow. Comprehensivesimulations show that HATDMA can yield high aggregatethroughput and at the same time achieve very goodfairness.
