Abstract

The paper describes an ongoing project to define asuitable process model for software process improvementin small to medium organizations. This is being carriedout as a collaborative project between Leeds MetropolitanUniversity and four small to medium companies who arecurrently implementing SPI programs. Key features of thePRISMS process are: explicitly relating improvementgoals to business goals, which are used to choose andprioritize key process areas for improvement; the use of asimplified and tailorable assessment method based onCMM [1]; the definition and use of metrics from theoutset; and mechanisms to encourage maximumtransparency in the process and participation by allstakeholders.
