Abstract

Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) components aremore and more used in the new applications development. They promise to reduce cost and risks, and to ensuresoftware higher quality. However, in practice, manyproblems are faced during the evaluation, selection andintegration. Major causes of these problems are due tothe lack of knowledge about COTS products, the ignoranceof the available methods of evaluation, selection andintegration, and the lack of guidance for choosingbetween these methods. Therefore, a COTS-baseddevelopment environment (CBDE) turns out to beessential. In this perspective, this paper proposes a surveyof COTS characterizations and proposes an extendedmodel. The use of these attributes in a CBDE is specifiedby a scenario denoted by a multi-model process known asmap formalism. The same development process is thenillustrated with a map scenario focusing on the differenttypes of selection / integration existing methods.
