Abstract

This paper describes a process for selecting andevaluating candidates for component based softwareengineering. The process is aimed at developerssourcing components from third party vendors. Componentmetadata and a formalised specification of theideal component, including context information, areused to drive the process. This specification is used toshortlist candidate components from commercialrepositories and to generate the tests and adaptationsfor the candidate components. Metrics from eachstage of the selection and evaluation process are thencombined to compare and rank components for inclusionin the target application. This approach to componentselection, using context information and formalmethods, helps address issues with componentsourcing, selection and testing of third party components.
