Abstract

Most media entertainment is in the form of narrative. It is important to understand user perceptions of narrative reality in entertainment design. While physical reality is an important element of perceived reality, starting in middle childhood perceptions of reality are increasingly associated with more abstract, conceptual, and even hypothetical aspects or reality. This paper reports on a program of research examining mental processes in making perceived reality judgments while viewing media. Typicality, pacing, and attributions about the causes of character behavior influence perceived reality. In addition, users make different perceived reality judgments about self and others. These findings are applied to the design of entertainment media.
