Abstract

The Centre for Advanced Studies is a newly formed applied research centre within the IBM Canada Limited Laboratory. Its primary aim is to facilitate the transfer of research ideas into the various product groups of the Laboratory. This paper provides some background to the formation of the Centre, some of the challenges deemed important in defining the role of the Centre, identifies a number of principles that are used to guide its formation and current operation, and reports on how it has fared to date. A brief comparison with the previous research framework within the Laboratory is also given. The paper concludes with a discussion of some of the weaknesses noted to date and directions for improving the Centre in the future.
