Abstract

An integral part of managing heterogeneous distributed computing systems is an information repository. The ultimate goal of our research is to specify a methodology for the design, analysis, and comparison of information repositories for such systems. We first outline the general characteristics of data repositories, including requirements and data model features. Then we build an experimental prototype system to test two candidate repositories: X.500 and AFS (Andrew File System). Performance and scalability measurements are collected, analyzed, and compared for the two platforms; and some preliminary conclusions are reached.
